Northumberland Weekly News Brief

(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) – The Northumberland detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) dealt with 323 incidents during this period, here are some examples:

Oct 31:

A car owner reported a tire slashed while parked at Kent Public School in Campbellford on Halloween evening.

A landlord in Cramahe Twp contacted police for advice on placing a pony that was left behind by former tenants. She was advised to contact Animal Control officials (and OSPCA).

Police responded to a report of possible gun shots and persons arguing at an Alnwick-Haldimand Twp home. Several officers arrived and determined that a couple had been arguing and slamming doors which mimicked the sound of gunshots. One partner was arrested for breach of the peace and held at the Cobourg OPP detachment until sober. No charges resulted and alcohol was a contributing factor to the escalation of events.

Nov. 1:

Police were called to a Hamilton Twp home where two persons were associating with each other contrary to conditions imposed upon them by the courts. As a result, an 18 yr old Peterborough, Ontario woman was arrested and charged with Failing to Comply with a Probation Order. A 25 yr old Hamilton Twp man was also arrested and charged with Failing to Comply with conditions of an Undertaking. Both were held for a bail hearing scheduled for November 2, 2016.

A Brighton farmer reported damage to his hay field on Cramahe Hill Rd possibly caused by a white Chev pickup truck. Investigation ongoing.

Police responded to reports of a black Kia SOL driving erratically in the westbound lanes of Hwy 401 in Hamilton Twp. Witnesses reported the car weaving and almost striking a construction barrier. The car was located and as a result of the ensuing investigation, Jerome PLAMONDON age 69 of Cobourg, Ontario is charged with Impaired Care & Control of a motor vehicle and Care & Control of a motor vehicle while his blood alcohol content exceeded 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood. He was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg November 23, 2016.

Nov 2:

A Brighton resident reported receiving a money order from a purchaser after posting a bike for sale on Kijiji. The amount on the money order was in excess of the agreed upon amount. She took it to her bank who informed her that this was a common fraud and to contact police. The responding officer confirmed that this was a ‘scam’ that would involve the purchaser ‘apologizing’ for the error and requesting the excess amount be sent back to him. The fraudulent money order would then not be honored by the bank leaving the caller responsible for the money sent.

A homeowner on Sandy Bay Rd in Hamilton Twp reported the theft of an Apple iPhone 6 (serial #F1DPVKF3GSMD) that occurred while hosting a Halloween party this past weekend. Investigation ongoing.

Police responded to a report of several children riding their bikes in front of a Brighton business swearing at customers and almost being hit due to the time of night (6:45pm). Officers located the children and drove them home to their parents who were advised of the complaint.

Nov 3:

Police were called to a Colborne residence where two adult siblings were arguing over cleaning the house. Their mother attended and one brother spent the night elsewhere. No charges resulted.

Police were advised to keep observation for a black Cadillac and a white Honda racing on Hwy 401 eastbound from the Durham Region area. Officers monitored traffic flow and did not locate the two vehicles.

A Seymour Twp resident on County Rd 8 reported his home broken into on Thanksgiving Monday. The culprit(s) stole a thumb drive. Investigation ongoing.

**Northumberland OPP officers also investigated seven accidental 911 calls, 12 motor vehicle collisions, 31 traffic related complaints and conducted two RIDE programs during this time period.
