A Guelph man faces charges after a store employee and police officer were both assaulted Thursday morning.

Approximately 11:40 a.m., Guelph Police Service officers were dealing with an unrelated matter when they heard screaming coming a business near Gordon Street and Wellington Street. A male ran from the business yelling for someone to call police.

The officers ran to the business and learned a male had entered, gone behind the counter and assaulted a female employee. Officers entered and ordered the man to the ground, but he ignored them and ran at one officer while throwing punches. He was taken to the floor and arrested.

The store employee, a female in her 60s, was transported to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

A 38-year-old Guelph man is charged with assault and assault police. He will appear in court June 21.

BB gun leads to arrest

A Guelph man faces several charges after he was found sleeping Thursday morning with what appeared to be a handgun in his pocket.

Shortly after 7 a.m. staff of a downtown social service agency called police after spotting a gun-shaped object in a client’s pocket. Officers arrived a short time later and observed the butt of a handgun in the sleeping man’s pocket.

An imitation Glock BB gun was seized and the male was arrested. A search incident to arrest revealed a container of BBs, four compressed carbon dioxide cylinders and 37 grams of suspected crack cocaine.

A 43-year-old Guelph man is charged with carrying a concealed weapon, possessing a weapon contrary to a prohibition order, possessing a controlled substance and breaching probation. He was held for a bail hearing Friday.

Impaired charge following driving complaint

A Mississauga man was arrested for impaired driving following a driving complaint in Guelph Thursday night.

Approximately 10:25 p.m. another motorist called police to report a suspected drunk driver. Police located the vehicle in a parking lot on Stone Road West and immediately noted a strong odour of alcohol on the driver’s breath. He failed a roadside breath test and was transported to the police station, where further tests confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

A 27-year-old Mississauga man is charged with impaired driving. His licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days. He will appear in court May 21.

Arrest after hit and run

An Erin man was arrested following a hit and run collision Thursday night.

Approximately 10:20 p.m. several witnesses reported seeing a pickup truck strike an SUV in a parking lot on Woodlawn Road West before driving away. One witness said the driver of the pickup appeared to be drinking a beer.

An officer located and stopped the pickup a short distance away and noted alcohol on the driver’s breath. He conducted a roadside breath test which resulted in a warning and located an open can of beer beside the driver’s seat.

A 28-year-old Erin man is charged with failing to stop at an accident and driving with open alcohol. His licence was suspended for three days. He will appear in court June 18.
