Farmers’ Market Slammed By Council – Must Pay Rent

At the 18April2016 North Huron council meeting, a councilor slammed the Wingham Farmers’ Market for promoting the location of the market before they had approval from town council. It was also revealed the Farmers’ Market received money from the Wingham BIA, effectively forcing taxpayers to fund the struggling market.

The committee wanted council to waive all rental fees for 2016 so the market could be more profitable. Council refused to waive the fees, and offered them a slightly discounted rate to rent a park. The rate was not disclosed at the meeting, and it is not known if the Farmers’ Market will survive or continue.

The market committee only expects to have about half a dozen vendors this year.
