DEER HUNT AND TRESPASSING

(OXFORD COUNTY, ON.) -Deer hunting season is now upon us in Oxford County, which is open from the beginning of October to the end of December. The first controlled hunt runs from November 3 to November 9, 2014. Over those seven days properly licensed hunters may hunt for deer with shotguns or muzzle loaders.

During this period the Oxford County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), will be checking hunters for proper paperwork for their firearms, and ensuring they have permission from property owners to be hunting on their land. OPP continue to monitor during all hunting seasons and we will be actively patrolling during the upcoming two controlled hunts when larger groups tend to take part in these hunts.

Hunters are reminded that their hunting licence in no way gives them the right to enter or cross private property without permission. To avoid problems and potential charges hunters are reminded to ask for permission before entering a property and obey posted signs and symbols.

Circular markings (10 cm or 4 inches) in red mean absolutely no entry and in yellow means no entry is prohibited except for activities that the property owner permits.

Anyone, not acting under a right or authority conferred by law who enters on a property where prohibited or engages in a prohibited activity on such a property must leave the property when directed to do so and may be charged under the TPA (fine of not more than $2,000.00)

Property owners should avoid confrontations with trespassers and obtain names and/or plate numbers and vehicle(s) descriptions. The matter can be reported to police and dealt in that matter.

Oxford OPP will be out monitoring for violations and will continue to conduct targeted patrols into the next controlled hunt commencing December 1 to December 7, 2014.
