Bicyclists Need To Identify Themselves

(MUNICIPALITY OF WEST PERTH, ON) On Saturday August 10, 2013 shortly before 5 a.m. a Perth County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer observed two males riding bicycles on Napier St. West in Mitchell. The males did not have lighting on their bicycles as required.

The males were pulled over by the officer and were requested to identify themselves. The males were advised that under the requirements of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA), when a police officer finds bicyclists in contravention of the HTA they are required to stop and identify themselves to the police officer. If they fail to do so they may be arrested. One of the males refused to identify himself and was arrested.

The male realizing the seriousness of not identifying himself, did finally provide his correct name and address. He was subsequently released from custody. The males aged 18 and 22 years, both West Perth residents, received a $20 ticket for having “improper bicycle lighting”.
