Bank Staff Save Elderly Woman From Being Scammed

On Wednesday a man contacted an 86yr old Owen Sound woman by phone claiming that he was from “Canada Revenue Services” and that she owed $1, 986.73 on her income taxes. She was advised that if she did not pay by Thursday that she would be arrested. The local resident was instructed not to tell anyone about the call but to attend a specific Financial Institution with cash and was given what was believed to be account information for the deposit. Fortunately staff at the woman’s bank questioned her large withdrawal and informed her of the scam before she was out any money.

Owen Sound Police would like to remind residents that income tax arrears will be identified on your C.R.A. Tax Assessment – not through a phone call. The Canada Revenue Agency does not leave telephone messages or cold-call citizens for income tax collections.
