Keep Children Off The Ice
(SOUTH BRUCE COUNTY, ON) – Southern Bruce County has experienced an unusually mild winter season. Cold arctic air has returned to the area, which may cause ice to start forming. With this in mind, the South Bruce OPP is sending another warning about playing on ice:
Ice does not freeze at a uniform thickness across most lakes and rivers. This can be particularly evident at the start of the winter season when near-shore ice is often much thicker and safer than ice further out.
Not all ice is created equal. Ice that has formed over flowing water, springs, pressure cracks, old ice holes or around the mouths of rivers and streams can be weaker than surrounding ice.
Clear blue ice is the strongest. White or opaque ice is much weaker. Ice that has a honeycombed look, common during thaws or in the spring, should be avoided altogether.
Traveling on frozen lakes or rivers with snowmobiles or vehicles can be particularly dangerous and added precautions must be taken.
Heavy snow on frozen lakes and rivers can insulate the ice below, causing the ice to freeze slower.
It’s important to let others know where you’re planning to fish and advise when you plan to return. If you are missing, rescue crews can narrow their search and potentially save your life.
Parents – be mindful while children are out of school, as they may venture out on frozen ponds, ditches or area waterways. Children should never play on or near ice covered bodies of water unless directly supervised by an experienced adult.
Winter weather conditions can be unpredictable and variable, proper equipment and experience is necessary to have a safe winter season on the ice. For more information on ice safety, visit the Royal Lifesaving Society online at http://www.lifesaving.ca/
Parents and caregivers are urged to share this information with their youth.

A search warrant was executed last evening by members of the Owen Sound Police drug unit, criminal investigation branch and the High Enforcement Action Team (H.E.A.T) and Community Oriented Response and Enforcement (C.O.R.E) units, at a residence in the 1000 Block of 3rd Avenue East.
The timely investigation and subsequent warrant was initiated by the hospitalization of at least three persons for severe symptoms of hallucinations and paranoia over the past 24 hours.
As a result of the search warrant, four male occupants were arrested at the residence.
A small quantity of marihuana, a cross bow and 14 grams of a beige powder substance was seized. The powder substance is believed to be a chemical compound referred to as PVP or bath salts. The substance is a chemical “designer drugâ€, often packaged and disguised as bath salts. It is believed that it is this substance which has created the recent incidents of paranoia and hallucinations in Owen Sound.
Resident occupant David Ward, 47 yrs was charged with possession of marihuana and possession of a weapon while prohibited. The other three males were releases without charges. The investigation is continuing and further charges may be pending.
Following the search, Owen Sound police encountered a fourth male suffering from similar symptoms of hallucinations and paranoia. The male was transported to hospital where he was treated and released. The male was charged with three counts of Breach of Probation associated to the use of the drug.
The substance was sent for analysis of the chemical compound to determine if the substance contains any drug prohibited by the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.
This substance is relatively unfamiliar to the area. The Owen Sound Police is warning the public that this substance is dangerous and is cautioning people not to use or experiment with this drug. Ingesting the substance causes unpredictable symptoms including hallucinations, paranoia, sweating, hypertension and suicidal thoughts. Methods of ingesting include, injection, smoking or orally.
