Wingham is suffering from decades of zero standards and neglect that continues to endanger our lives and quality of living. Having no standards means council can’t hold department heads to account even if they wanted too, and department heads know this. How can you hold department heads to account if they don’t have job descriptions or set of minimum standards?
That’s why raises are rubber stamped every year, no matter have deplorable their job performance. If you are in charge of the roads and they collapse or busses go off the road due to sheer neglect, you get a raise and promotion. If you are charge of Economic Development and drop property values, scare business away and destroy the Witches Walk and Muskrat Party you get raises. Don’t you wish you could screw up so royally at your job place and get raises and praise?
Wingham’s slow implosion started whenever council stopped holding department heads to account. This allowed them to hire all their friends and family, regardless of qualification, to the point where 125% of money raised by taxation goes into their pockets as wages and benefits. WFP started alerting people back when it was only 110%, now NH is bloated with staff to the point where they have to “double up” to look busy (2 to empty trash, etc etc.)
In the photos below you can see in 2013 that the storm drain was failing. The previous shoddy repair clearly shows signs of imminent failure as chunks of “patch” are missing. This could have easily been detected by public works with a simple visual inspection, but like I said before, there are no minimum standards in North Huron to force department heads to do their jobs.
This collapsing drain should have been addressed in 2013 or earlier as it is clearly in very poor shape. Don’t worry, there will be absolutely no consequences for the “man” responsible, only a promotion, raise, and decreased workload.
Council must stop rewarding failure, grow some gonads and stand up to Department Heads.
