Protective Wingham Floodplain To Be Filled In For Gas Station To Help Fund Failed Amalgamation And Decimate Josephine Street

There can be no doubt that the Wingham, Blyth and East-Wawanosh amalgamation in 2001 has seen all wards suffer. Under the reign of current director of public works we have seen light posts and a stop light fall, obstructed stop signs, storm drains collapse and get filled with cold patch, potholes expand, weeds and TREES grow in our streets and sidewalks, Carling Terrace surface failing due to a complete lack of simple inexpensive maintenance, missing and broken safety rails, etc. etc.

Council thinks the only solution to our problem is more money, not holding staff and the CAO to account. That’s why they wanted to sell the trailer park, they thought adding 6 more properties to our tax roll would save the town. Now a section of the floodplain that protects Wingham will be filled in for a gas station and restaurant, located in the north-west portion of hwy 4 + 86 intersection.

The zoning was rammed through under the claim it was for economic development. Gas is about the only reason people have to stop in Wingham on the way to the cottage, as our grocery and hardware store prices rival remote Northern Ontario Communities and gas is typically 6-10 cents higher than surrounding areas. In the near future, Cottagers will be able to dine and save money on gas at the very edge of Wingham, and never need to visit the downtown core. As the Health and Fire Departments start to enforce their mandates, more and more buildings will be shuttered on Josephine St. The property values on Josephine Street will continue to plummet as the cost of upgrades outweigh the value of some buildings. All future development is going to be along hwy 86 at the expense of Josephine St businesses.
