OPP Remind Everyone About The Dangers Of Texting And Walking

(NORFOLK COUNTY, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Norfolk County Detachment would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone about the dangers of texting and walking.

The OPP are too familiar with the dangers of texting and driving. It puts everyone’s safety at risk. Injuries associated to the distraction of text messaging are not confined to roadways. Texting while walking can also be dangerous.

No text message is worth your life whether you’re operating a motor vehicle or walking. Changing your regiment may be all it takes to save your life. Even if you text and walk while on the sidewalk, people still run into things, including other pedestrians. People have also been known to step off the sidewalk into live traffic which could cause a collision or worse, a fatality.

Millions of text messages are sent everyday by Canadians and according to the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association, Canadians send nearly 10 million text messages an hour, or 227 million per day.

The OPP are urging everyone to keep their cellular phone and other electronic devices in their pocket while crossing the street in order to keep their attention focused on their surroundings. Safety doesn’t happen by accident and it certainly does not take a holiday.” Inspector Joseph Varga
