(PORT HOPE, ON) – On Thursday December 12, 2013 Northumberland Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were contacted at 6:45 pm regarding a male who went into the woods to cut trees in the Municipality of Port Hope, Ontario and had not returned home at the scheduled time.
At approximately 3:30 pm on Thursday, a 69 years old male had gone to the back of his property on Mastwoods Road, in the Municipality of Port Hope with an all-terrain vehicle and chainsaw to cut trees. The male, not dressed appropriately for the winter temperatures, had not returned at the scheduled time. His spouse became concerned, checking the property where he was supposed to be but could not find him. She then contacted the OPP for assistance.
Northumberland OPP officers from the Cobourg site, a family member and his friend searched the wooded area, eventually located the male approximately 1.5 kilometres from the trail where the male was supposed to be. A tree had fallen on him and landed on a lower limb, causing severe injury to him. OPP administered first aid on the male and he was then carried from the woods by those on scene to an awaiting Northumberland Emergency Medical Services (EMS) ambulance where he was then transferred by air ambulance to a trauma centre in Toronto for further treatment.
