Members of Central Hastings O.P.P are encouraging motorists to obey posted signs as well as the traffic control devices positioned to close roads due to area flooding. Drivers intentionally disobeying these signs and operating a vehicle on a closed highway are committing an offence under the Highway Traffic Act.
These measures have been put into place to prevent injury or damage to property. By using a closed highway, people are doing so at their own risk. The road authority having jurisdiction of the highway is not liable for any damage sustained by a person using a highway closed to traffic. By moving traffic control devices to gain access and not returning them to their original position, the safety of other area commuters are also being put at risk.
