Northumberland Weekend News Brief

(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) – The Northumberland detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) dealt with 134 incidents this past weekend, here are some examples:

Oct 21:

Report of two persons dressed up in clown costumes scaring a youth waiting for a school bus on Old Mill Rd in Alnwick-Haldimand Twp. Police were unable to locate them.

Report of a break-in to a new home under construction on Theatre Rd (near Dale Rd) sometime overnight. The culprit(s) forced entry into the garage and stole a ‘Van Mark’ metal bending brake Model M1050 valued at $3,000 the weight of which would require two persons to remove. The owner advised that the brake had been cut from the original 14’ length to 10’ making it unique. Investigation ongoing. (see attached picture)

Report of a red canoe washed up on shore at a business on Queen St in Campbellford along the Trent River.

Officers provided assistance to a Hwy 401 motorist who had run out of gas in the Port Hope area.

Oct 22:

Police responded to complaint of a break-in to the Codrington Community Centre that occurred sometime overnight. The culprit(s) broke a window near the main entrance to gain entry and stole a quantity of cash. The suspect is described as a male Caucasian, 5 6”, medium build, dark hair, in his late teens or early twenties wearing a ‘Bulls’ baseball cap, light coloured pants and a striped hooded sweatshirt. Investigation ongoing.

A Cramahe Twp homeowner on Tobacco Rd reported hearing gunshots around the noon hour with one striking his house. Police walked the surrounding property but were unable to locate the persons responsible. The OPP would like to remind hunters that they must never shoot unless they are absolutely sure of their target, what lies beyond it and that they are legally responsible for every discharged round.

At 9:15pm a silver Mercedes was measured to be travelling 167 km/h on Hwy 401eastbound in the Brighton area. A 22 yr old Richmond Hill, ON man was charged with Stunt Driving – Excessive Speed. His licence was suspended for a period of 7 days and his car impounded as well. He stated that he was going to Montreal to visit his girlfriend.

Oct 23:

A Trent Hills youth was charged with Mischief Under $5,000 (two counts) and Failing to comply with a recognizance after an incident at his home.

Officers investigated three domestic disputes involving child custody and property issues. Two were reported in Trent Hills and one in Port Hope. No charges resulted in any of these incidents and all were advised to seek legal assistance from a lawyer.

A 20 yr old Courtland, ON man was charged with speeding (141 km/h) on Hwy 401 in Brighton. His licence was found to be under suspension, his car was impounded for 7 days and he was charged accordingly.

Northumberland OPP officers investigated six accidental 911 calls, 15 motor vehicle collisions, 29 traffic related complaints and conducted two RIDE programs over the weekend.
