(CALEDON, ON) – On September 16th, 2014 at 2:27 am, officers from the Caledon Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) observed a white vehicle travelling northbound at a high rate of speed on Airport Road. The officers, who were travelling southbound, activated the marked cruiser’s emergency equipment and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. Officers observed that the rear lights of the motor vehicle were turned off in an apparent attempt to evade a traffic stop. Officers discounted pursuing the motor vehicle due to the high rate of speed at which the vehicle was travelling.
Later, another officer located the suspect vehicle travelling southbound in the same area. The officer noted that the vehicle was being operated without head or tail lights. Subsequently, the officer initiated a traffic stop and he was advised by the driver that he had earlier evaded police.
Through the investigation, the officers learned that the driver had taken the motor vehicle without the owner’s consent.
In conclusion, Stephen HEAPE, 18, from Caledon was arrested and charged with Flight while Pursued by Peace Officer, Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle and Take Motor Vehicle Without Consent.
The accused was held in custody and appeared at the Ontario Court of Justice in Orangeville the following day.
