(WEST PARRY SOUND, ON) – On April 3, 2015 the West Parry Sound Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on general patrol in the Town of Parry Sound. At approximately 11:15 a.m. a male was observed walking eastbound towards Forest Street along the Canadian National (CN) rail line. The male, Terry JACKSON, 62 years of age from Parry Sound was stopped and issued a Provincial Offences Notice (PON) for trespassing on railway property.
In the West Parry Sound area, police have investigated numerous incidents involving motor vehicles and pedestrians versus trains. Police would like to remind the public of the hazards surrounding highway/railway crossings and trespassing on railway property.
Here are ten tips to help save your live when it comes to railways
• Walking or playing on train tracks is dangerous and illegal
• Be prepared to stop at crossings
• Cross train tracks at designated highway/railway crossings
• Look for the crossbuck sign, lights or gates at crossings
• Listen for warning bells and whistles
• Obey the signals
• If one train passes, make sure that a second train isn’t approaching on another track in the same or opposite direction
• Obey the directions of a police officer or member of a train crew directing traffic at a crossing.
• Cross the tracks in low gear, do not change gears while crossing
• If your vehicle stalls on the tracks, get out quickly and away from the vehicle and tracks.
