East Algoma OPP Press Releases

(ELLIOT LAKE, ON) – On October 21, 2016, members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on regular patrol duties in the City of Elliot Lake.

Shortly after 2:30 p.m., police observed a southbound vehicle on Highway 108 witch appeared to be unsafe for travelling on the highway. A traffic stop was initiated. A vehicle inspection was performed by the officer who determined the vehicle had many defects. The plates and the vehicle registration were removed from the vehicle and returned to the Ministry of Transportation. The unfit vehicle was towed.

As a result, Christina BRAY, 45 years of age, from Spanish, Ontario, was issued a provincial offence notice and charged with:

Operate Unsafe Vehicle, contrary to section 84 of the Highway Traffic Act.

MALE CHARGED WITH DANGEROUS DRIVING

(ELLIOT LAKE, ON) – On October 22, 2016, members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were on regular patrol duties in the City of Elliot Lake.

Shortly after 1:00 p.m., police observed a male known to them to be driving northbound on Highway 108, in breach of his recognizance.

The driver turned into the parking lot of a local grocery store. The vehicle was travelling at a high rate of speed colliding with a shopping cart that was being pushed by a pedestrian. Another pedestrian had to jump out of the way. The vehicle came to a stop as it collided with a vehicle in front of him.

As a result, Wesley MAYNES, 58 years of age, from Elliot Lake, Ontario, was charged with:

Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle, contrary to section 249(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC); and

Fail to Comply with Recognizance, contrary to section 145(3) of the CC.

The accused was held for Bail Court and appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sault Ste. Marie on October 24, 2016.

FEMALE CHARGED WITH FAILING TO COMPLY

(ELLIOT LAKE, ON)- On October 24, 2016, shortly after 3:44 a.m., members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a domestic dispute at a residence on Dieppe Avenue in the City of Elliot Lake.

Investigation determined the female was breaching conditions of her release Undertaking.

As a result, a 30 year old female, from Elliot Lake, Ontario, was arrested and charged with: Fail to Comply with Conditions of Undertaking Given by an Officer in Charge, contrary to section 145(5.1) of the Criminal Code.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on November 1, 2016.

SON ASSAULTS MOTHER’S BOYFRIEND

(ELLIOT LAKE, ON)- On October 24, 2016, shortly after 7:30 p.m., members of the East Algoma Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to an assault that just occurred at a residence on Beckett Boulevard in the City of Elliot Lake.

Investigation determined a 17 year old male had damaged his room and left the residence for a few days. The male returned on this date to retrieve some property and got into an altercation with his mother’s boyfriend.

As a result, the 17 year old male was arrested and charged with:

Assault, contrary to section 266 of the Criminal Code (CC); and

Mischief Under $5000, contrary to section 430(4) of the CC.

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Elliot Lake on December 6, 2016.
