Derek J. VERMEIREN – Drunk Driving, Drugs

(LAMBTON, ON) – On Friday November 11th, 2016, members of the Lambton County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a R.I.D.E. program in the community of Thedford, Municipality of Lambton Shores. As a result, one driver was arrested and charged with impaired driving and drug possession.

On Friday November 11th, 2016, at just before 8:00 p.m., a male party operating a Ford sedan entered the R.I.D.E program located in the area of Louisa Street, Thedford, Ontario. Officers stopped the vehicle and while speaking with the lone male driver, suspected the driver had been consuming alcoholic beverages. A breath demand was made for a road side test that resulted in a fail. As a result, the male driver was arrested and transported to the Forest OPP Detachment where subsequent breath samples determined that the male was over the legal limit. A subsequent search of the vehicle upon arrest located an amount of suspected cannabis marihuana which was seized by officers.

Consequently, 34 year old Derek J. VERMEIREN of Strathroy, ON was charged with

Driving with More Than 80 mgs of Alcohol in Blood

Possession Controlled Schedule II Substance

The accused will appear in the Sarnia Ontario Court of Justice on Monday December 5th, 2016.

The OPP is reminding drivers that any amount of alcohol or other drugs can impair one’s ability to drive. Impaired driving remains the leading cause of criminal death in Canada.
