(NORTH BAY, ON) -On August 5, 2014 at approximately 1:46 p.m., North Bay Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a multi-vehicle collision on Highway 17, Bonfield Township.
Three vehicles were stopped on the highway in a construction zone when a transport came up from behind and struck the last vehicle in line, pushing it off the roadway. The transport continued on and struck the next vehicle in line, pushing it forward and off the roadway, and then rear-ending the third vehicle where the transport came to a stop.
Two people from the first vehicle and the driver of the transport were transported to hospital with minor injuries.
Driver of the transport, Wilfred NYAMBAKA from Brampton, Ontario, was charged with careless driving, section 130 of the Highway Traffic Act.
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is advising the motoring public that there is construction work underway on Highway17 east of North Bay. The speed limit has been reduced in the areas where the work is taking place. Members of the North Bay OPP detachment and the Highway Safety Division will be strictly enforcing the speed limit reductions. Please be alert for the changes and watch for construction workers along the roadway. The OPP is reminding motorists that speeding fines are doubled in a construction zone when workers are present and working.
Seven motor vehicle collisions were reported to members of the North Bay, Powassan and Mattawa Detachments on August 5, 2014 between 10:32 a.m. and 5: 28 p.m.. Two of the collisions had personal injuries. Most of the collisions were caused my inattentive drivers or drivers who were not obeying the rules of the road.
We are reminding motorists to stay attentive and to take their time. Not only does cutting corners that cause collisions not save you time; it could cost you and others around you their safety.
