Public works director Ralph Campbell was responsible for forcing everyone to switch to clear garbage bags. This was done in an attempt to make everyone recycle as much material as possible. This was met with some resistance and complaints from citizens.
This one minor change, has made a dramatic impact on the volume of garbage going into the landfill. In February, 38.57 tonnes of garbage were picked up at the curb, this dropped to 28.82 tonnes in April. This is a reduction of 9.75 tonnes or 25%.
This will help prolong the life of our landfill, saving the taxpayers money. Ralph’s minor rule change, could be diverting over 100 tonnes of material from our landfill every year.
Hopefully Council can see the impact of such a seemingly minor detail, and start to tackle our high tax rate. WFP still believes that a competitive tax rate is essential for Wingham to thrive and prosper.
