$325 Fine For Running Stop Light

The Wingham Police Service would like to remind drivers in the area the purpose of traffic lights. Traffic lights are designed for safety and to control traffic on our roads. After the recent construction on Josephine Street in Wingham, the traffic lights were improved and are all functioning properly. Police would like to remind drivers that an amber traffic light means stop if it can be done safely. If you cannot stop in safety, you can proceed through with caution.

The amber light is approximately three seconds and would allow the vehicle to clear the intersection. Failing to stop safely for an amber traffic light could bring a ticket in the amount of $180. Red lights do not allow for someone to proceed, they must stop. During a recent observation of the Josephine and John Street intersection, in less than an hour four vehicles were observed going through the red light without slowing down. The fine for a red light ticket is $325. Wingham police will be monitoring the lights closely. Our goal is not to issue tickets but to have drivers stop when required by law and keep our roads safe.
