(THUNDER BAY, ON) On Thursday, September 18, 2014, at approximately 7:58 am, officers from the Upsala Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a collision involving two tractor trailer units on Highway 17, approximately 20 kilometers east of Upsala.
The driver of a west bound tractor trailer unit crossed the centre line into the east bound lane.
The driver of an east bound tractor trailer unit observed the west bound tractor trailer unit driving towards him in his lane and in an attempt to avoid a head on collision, the driver veered over into the west bound lane.
The west bound driver then realized he was in the wrong lane, corrected very hard and collided with the east bound trailer.
The west bound tractor trailer came to a rest upright in the east bound ditch.
The driver and passenger of the west bound tractor trailer were not injured.
The east bound tractor trailer rolled over and came to a rest upside down in the west bound ditch.
The driver and passenger of the east bound tractor trailer were transported to hospital by ambulance. The driver sustained non life threatening injuries while the passenger did not suffer any injuries.
Both tractor trailer units sustained extensive damage.
The driver of the west bound tractor trailer, Yuriy LIZVINSKYY, 59 years of age from Winnipeg, Manitoba was charged with Careless Driving contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.
