Update: CHAIN REACTION COLLISION CLOSES EASTBOUND 401

(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) – Northumberland Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers remain on scene of this collision that occurred earlier this morning. The removal of the involved tractor trailers and other motorists that were behind the collision is now completed. Ministry of Environment (MOE) crews are on scene conducting environmental cleanup of the diesel fuel spill.

OPP will now be closing ONE lane on the WESTBOUND 401 at Gully Road – Alnwick – Haldimand Township near the collision scene on the north side of the roadway as part of the cleanup requirements. It will remain closed until further notice. The other westbound lane will still be open to traffic. Motorists are asked to exercise caution travelling west and be mindful of cleanup crews in the area.

For environmental and highway safety reasons, all eastbound lanes of the 401 remain closed at this time and there is no estimated time from the MOE as to when the cleanup will be completed.

Once OPP has received CONFIRMED information that all lanes on Highway 401 is completely open to traffic media outlets will be updated.
