Two Drivers Caught Racing

(Ottawa, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Ottawa Detachment has charged two drivers after an incident on Highway 417 westbound near Kinburn Side Road.

On April 10th, 2015, at approximately 6:22 am, officers observed 2 motor vehicles approaching an OPP cruiser from behind traveling in excess of 150 Kph. The officers subsequently stopped both vehicles, which were seized for 7 days.

The two male drivers, 18 and 21 years age of Renfrew County and Laurentian Valley Township have both been charged with:

Race a motor vehicle contrary to section 172(1) of The Highway Traffic Act.

What are the penalties for driving 50 kph. over the speed limit?

Pre-conviction – Immediate 7-day licence suspension and 7-day vehicle Impoundment;

Upon conviction – $2,000 to $10,000 fine, 6 demerit points, up to 6 months jail, up to 2 years licence suspension for a first conviction; and

Second offence – Driver licence suspension up to 10 years within 10 years of first conviction.

The following demerit point penalties apply to drivers convicted of a speed-related offence. Remember, if you collect enough demerit points, you can lose your driver’s licence:

3 points for exceeding the speed limit by 16 to 29 km/h;

4 points for exceeding the speed limit by 30 to 49 km/h; and

6 points for exceeding the speed limit by 50 km/h or more.
