(HURON COUNTY, ON) – Police continue to investigate needless thefts from motor vehicles across the county. A recent rash of vehicles entries in Goderich is prompting another warning. It is very difficult to understand why people would leave items such as wallets, cameras, passports, laptops, GPS units, purses, sports equipment etc. inside an unlocked vehicle for any period of time – especially overnight!
Here are some reminders to the public to encourage people to be responsible for their property.
Always roll up your vehicle’s windows, lock the doors and pocket the keys.
Never leave your vehicle unattended while it is running.
If you have a garage, use it and lock the door as well as your vehicle.
Never leave your car keys in plain view or in an easily accessible area.
Never leave valuable objects or packages in full view. Put them in the trunk.
Most thieves who enter vehicles and steal items are not overly ambitious. If it’s too much work to get inside your vehicle and there is nothing sitting in plain view that they may want, most will move on to another vehicle that is easier to enter. If you insist on leaving your vehicle unlocked overnight, at least remove ALL valuables (including your ownership and insurance documents) so there is nothing to steal.
