TELEPHONE FRAUDSTERS AT IT AGAIN

(ZORRA TOWNSHIP, ON) – The Oxford County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to an incident known as the grandparent scam that occurred in Zorra Township on October 22, 2014.

In this scam, individuals are contacted by suspects attempting get money wired through Western Union to an apparent court clerk to help their child out as they are in trouble with the law.

There was no financial loss to the individual. In this case the individual checked the facts provided by the fraudster and was able to confirm the information provided was false.

Other scams that have occurred are in relation to sending money across seas in return for gold, and to send money across seas or harm will come to a relative. In all our cases, the claims made to individuals have been fraudulent, and can result in loss of money.

OPP would like to remind the public that these scams are becoming more common and people should be aware and cautious when receiving such calls. Family and friends should bring these types of scams to their attention so when they do receive these calls they are prepared and simply HANG UP!”
