(NORFOLK COUNTY, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Norfolk County Detachment is investigating an incident of computer fraud at a Mardon Avenue, Port Dover, Norfolk County, Ontario address.
On Saturday, April 19, 2014 at approximately 10:17 p.m., police received a call from a concerned resident after a call was received at their residence from a male advising that he was from Microsoft and needed access to their computer as it was infected with several viruses.
Access was granted remotely by the home owner who was then asked for payment. A credit card was provided and was subsequently charged $249 dollars. The unknown male was then observed to access all the personal data and files that were on the computer.
Computer owners and users are reminded, that unless you initiate the call, do not allow anyone to remotely access your computer and please don’t give out personal, banking or credit card information to anyone unless you are sure of whom you are dealing with.
