POLICE ISSUE WARNING ABOUT SCAM

(Gravenhurst, ON) -The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Bracebridge detachment is investigating reports of fraud from local residents that have received mail stating that they won a lottery.

The local residents received a letter from an “Australian Lottery” claiming that they had won large sums of money. In order to collect their winnings the letter requested that the resident send money to the lottery. Some have fallen prey to this request and have sent money.

Always remember, if an offer sounds suspicious or seems ‘too good to be true’, it probably is. If you’re in doubt, it’s wise to ask the advice of a close friend or relative, or even your banker. Rely on people you can trust.

It’s not always easy to spot scams, and new ones are invented every day. If you suspect that you may be a target of fraud, or if you have already sent funds, don’t be embarrassed – you’re not alone.
