(KENORA, ON) – The Kenora Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is investigating a fatal plane crash south of Kenora on Dora Lake. The lake is located in a chain of inland lakes on the Aulneau Peninsula on Lake of the Woods. The chain of lakes includes Chappie Lake, the previously named location of the crash.
Police were called on Friday August 8, 2014 at 4:45pm CST after the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC Trenton) received a signal from an Emergency Locater Transmitter (ELT) in the area of Chappie Lake. Search and Rescue (SAR) members attended the area shortly after 4:00pm and located a downed Cessna 182 aircraft. Two occupants were deceased and a third was seriously injured and succumbed to her injuries despite life-saving efforts of SAR members.
The deceased have been identified as the pilot, 41 year old Nikolas RAJALA, 40 year old Teresa RAJALA and 36 year old Lynn BOHANON, all of Grand Rapids Minnesota. They were staying at an area fishing lodge and had attended Dora Lake to fish for the day.
The Transport Safety Board is continuing their investigation into the details of the crash.
