OPP SEIZE FIREARM ON TRAFFIC STOP

(BRIGHTON, ON) – On Tuesday November 19, 2013 a Northumberland Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer was conducting speed enforcement on Highway 401 east of Brighton when a motorist was stopped and found to have a firearm in the vehicle.

At approximately 11:16 am today, the OPP officer was conducting speed enforcement on Highway 401 for the eastbound traffic, east of County Road 26 (Smithfield Road) in the Municipality of Brighton when he stopped a motorist for speeding.

The officer conducted an investigation into the lone male occupant of the 2008 Chevy Malibu and found that he was wanted on outstanding arrest warrants in another police jurisdiction. The officer arrested the male on the outstanding warrant and detained him in the police cruiser. Upon further investigation of the vehicle, assisting officers located a firearm under the floor carpet on the passenger’s front seat.

Ronald Keith NICHOLAS, 30, from Toronto, Ontario has been charged under the Criminal Code with:

Unauthorized possession of a firearm

Possessing a firearm knowing its possession is unauthorized

Carrying a concealed weapon

The accused is being held in custody to appear at a bail hearing in the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg, Ontario on Wednesday November 20, 2013 at 1:30 pm.
