(LAMBTON, ON) Lambton Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is reminding the public that if someone calls you to tell you that your computer has a virus or that your computer is malfunctioning, this is not true.
When your roof leaks, you know it before the roofing companies would know it. If your computer is not working right you will know that as well. Microsoft, will not call you to tell you that your computer isn’t functioning because it is doubtful that Microsoft knows you.
Lambton OPP is urging the public to not allow access to any computer at home or work to anyone over the phone unless that repair person has been called by the computer owner/operator. Members of the public are urged to stop allowing remote access to their computers and to not give out any banking information.
This scam is over two years old and continues to be a success for the people who are carrying out the scams. The callers, who represent themselves as employees of Microsoft are doing a very good job of frightening computer owners about viruses.
If you have doubts about your computer, please consider taking your computer to a local and reputable computer repair person or company. If you receive a phone call telling you that your computer has a virus and you believe the person on the phone, then take your computer in to a local and reputable computer repair person or company.
