(ALNWICK-HALDIMAND TWP, ON) – Northumberland Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is investigating a substantial senior fraud on a couple from Alnwick Haldimand Township that has been happening over a period of months. The senior couple has been defrauded money from their bank account and line of credit.
The Northumberland OPP Detachment Crime Unit investigation is still in the early stages but it is believed that the victims may be out as much as $60,000.
The 83 year old female victim and her 85 year old husband have been scammed by an unknown person(s) who has convinced the female to provide cash, purchase computer products and provide bank account numbers that were then used to transfer a large amount of money from their line of credit. The victim has received several phone calls stating that she has won prizes from a lottery in Spain, another call convincing her that she was “assisting the police†and would receive a reward and one from a caller in June 2014 claiming to be Reader’s Digest and that she has won $2.5 million dollars if she sent them $4,000 to release the funds.
This incident has been reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre and is continuing to be investigated by OPP.
