(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) – Northumberland Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was busy over the Thanksgiving Day long weekend. From Friday, October 11 to Monday, October 14, 2013 officers received 178 dispatched calls for service.
Operation Impact, Canada’s largest annual road safety campaign was in full effect with Northumberland officers issuing numerous charges for the “Big 4†driving behaviours: impaired driving, lack of occupant restraint, distracted driving and all aspects of aggressive driving. In Alnwick Haldimand Township on Friday, October 11 at about 2:18 pm, a 17 year old female was found speeding on County Road 22 near Centreton at 81 kilometers per hour in a posted 50 kilometre per hour zone. As she travelled westbound approaching the officer operating the radar, she drifted completely into the oncoming lane. When she was about 200 feet from the officer, she saw him and corrected herself into the proper lane. She pulled over as directed by the officer and admitted she was “changing the song on her iPhone†which was clearly visible to the officer in the center console. The female was issued Provincial Offence Notices for speeding and distracted driving under the Highway Traffic Act. Luckily there was no oncoming eastbound traffic.
On Friday, October 11, 2013 at 11:53 pm, a 22 year old male from Clarington, Ontario was arrested for Impaired Operation and Over 80 milligrams blood alcohol content after being observed on Highway 401 westbound in Cramahe Township. Officers received a driving complaint of a vehicle that was “all over the road†and varying speeds. Robert, Joseph GOLOBIC was released on a promise to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg, Ontario on Wednesday, November 6, 2013 at 9:30 am.
On Saturday, October 12, 2013 at approximately 11:41 am Northumberland OPP attended to three vehicle collision on Highway 401 eastbound near Boyce’s Bridge Road in Alnwick-Haldimand Township. Three vehicles had come in contact with each other in the left lane. The rear vehicle, a white Chevrolet van, struck a Ford truck in from of it failing to stop for traffic which was then driven into a brown Toyota Sienna. Officers conducted an investigation that resulted in John CHATTERSON, 48 from Cramahe Township being issued Provincial Offence Notices for careless driving and driving while under suspension under the Highway Traffic Act. No injuries were reported as a result of this collision and Highway 401 remained open.
On Sunday, October 13, 2013 Northumberland OPP received a call from a citizen in Trent Hills advising that his friend was impaired and trying to leave his residence to return back to Toronto. Officers arrived and found a silver/brown Cadillac Deville parked on Cole’s Point Road with the suspected male driver reclined asleep in the driver’s seat and the keys in his right hand. Officers conducted an investigation and charged Talib MOHOMED, age 64 from Etobicoke, Ontario with impaired care and control of motor vehicle and refuse to provide breath sample under the Criminal Code. The accused was released on a promise to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg on Wednesday November 6, 2013 at 9:30 am. Refusing to provide a breath sample carries the same penalty as impaired operation.
