Northumberland Weekly News Brief

(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) – The Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) dealt with a variety of calls this past week. Here are some examples:

Feb 1:

The owner of a home under construction on Ontario St in Hamilton Twp reported the theft of a case of beer (Budweiser) and red bolts cutters sometime over the weekend. Investigation ongoing.

A white Pontiac exiting Hwy 401 at Burnham St in Hamilton Twp was stopped and the 46 yr old driver from Oshawa was found to have a suspended licence. He was also charged with having unauthorized licence plates on the car which was towed from the scene.

Police charged the ex-partner of a Port Hope woman with Mischief Under $5,000 and Breach of Probation after he kicked in a door and damaged a flat screen TV. The man was held for a bail hearing.

Police responded to a report of several persons chasing a male in downtown Colborne. Officers arrived and determined that family members were attempting to control their son who was intoxicated and had run out of the home. The 22 yr old man was arrested for being intoxicated in a public place, taken to the Brighton detachment and held until he was sober.

While officers were dealing with the intoxicated male in Colborne, they were approached by another person who reported a domestic dispute with his girlfriend. As a result of that investigation, an adult woman was charged with Spousal Assault, Mischief Under $5,000 and Breach of Undertaking. She was held for a bail hearing.

Feb 2:

A suspicious vehicle (black Subaru) was stopped after leaving the Port Hope OnRoute service centre. As a result of the ensuing investigation the driver, Ali KARIMIAN age 50 of Toronto, ON is charged with Possession of Counterfeit Currency (US $50 bills x7), breaching conditions of a prior release relating the same offence, driving while under suspension x 3 and other Highway Traffic Act offences. He was held for a bail hearing and the vehicle was towed from the scene.

Police located a suspicious black truck reported in the area of Greenly Rd in Percy Twp. Officers determined that the driver was attempting to get his baby to sleep with the motion of the truck.

Police responded to a Brighton business where a confused elderly woman had wandered inside unsure of where she was. Officers determined that she was a known dementia sufferer and returned her home.

Feb 3:

A Hastings resident reported a fraudulent cellular account opened in her name. After investigation the officer determined the account was valid and opened by another person with the same name. The mobile carrier simply mixed the billing addresses up.

Paramedics requested police assistance on Ontario St in Hamilton Twp with an uncooperative intoxicated bicyclist who had fallen off his bike. Officers arrested and charged the 64 yr old man with being intoxicated in a public place. He was held at the Cobourg detachment for his own safety until sober.

An Alnwick-Haldimand Twp resident reported returning home to find a message on his phone. A male with a heavy accent stated ‘you or your attorney should call or bad things will happen to you’. He called the number provided and the male identified himself as from ‘Canada Revenue Agency’. The caller recognized this as a fraud, exchanged words with the scam artist and contacted police.

Feb 4:

MTO reported the theft of six Haze deep cycle batteries from a billboard sign on Hwy 401 westbound at Nagle Rd in Hamilton Twp – value: $2,500

Police attended a Colborne residence for a domestic disturbance. After investigation, a male was arrested and charged with Spousal Assault causing bodily harm and Mischief Under $5,000. He was released with an impending court date.

A Scarborough motorist reported hitting debris on Hwy 401 westbound in the Port Hope area yesterday. Damages are estimated to be less than $2,000.

Northumberland OPP officers also responded to 16 accidental 911 calls, investigated 12 motor vehicle collisions, 24 traffic related complaints and conducted three RIDE programs.
