Northumberland Weekly News Brief

(NORTHUMBERLAND, ON) – The Northumberland detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) dealt with 366 incidents during this period, here are some examples:

Nov 4:

A bylaw officer in Brighton requested police presence when visiting a home owner who had been ordered to clean up their property. No issues arose.

An Alnwick-Haldimand Twp mother requested police assistance after her teenaged son locked her out of the home. The son had left prior to officers arriving and no further police involvement was required.

An officer observed a black Ford Explorer travelling eastbound on Hwy 401 in Hamilton Twp at 8:45pm. A subsequent check on the status of the licence plates revealed that they had been reported stolen from the Toronto area. The vehicle was stopped and the driver was arrested for possession of the stolen plates. During the investigation the driver made death threats to two officers and displayed signs of being impaired by alcohol. He was taken to the Cobourg detachment for further tests resulting in David Fredrick POPE age 49 of Scarborough, ON being charged with:

Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000

Impaired Care & Control of a motor vehicle

Having Care & Control of a motor vehicle while his blood alcohol content exceeded 80mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood

Uttering Threats to cause death or bodily harm (two counts)

Driving while under suspension

Other Highway Traffic Act offences

He was held for a bail hearing the following day and remains in custody with a future bail hearing set for November 14, 2016.

Nov 5:

Police attended a Hamilton Twp home for a domestic where a couple had been arguing. Everyone was calm when officers arrived and no charges resulted. Alcohol was contributing factor.

A Colborne area resident on County Rd 2 reported his 18speed Supercycle mountain bike stolen sometime overnight. The culprit left behind another bicycle which police seized.

An officer conducting radar enforcement on County Rd 10 in Port Hope measured a southbound grey Chev Cobalt travelling 135km/h in an 80km/h zone near the 7th Line. The 22 yr old female driver from Campbellcroft was charged with Stunt Driving – Excessive Speed. Her vehicle was impounded for seven days and her licence suspended for the same period of time. She stated to the officer that there was no emergency and that she was simply going to pick up a family member from work.

Nov 6:

Report of a youth observed breaking into cars on Trentview Cr in Trent Hills at 12:18am. The youth was described as wearing a black/white checkered long sleeve shirt. Officers patrolled the area but were unable to locate the suspect.

Report of a large bush party with 50-100 youths on Pogue Rd Cramahe Twp at 1:00am. The youths dispersed when officers arrived.

Two trailers were reported broken into at the Cobourg East Campground on Benlock Rd in Grafton sometime over the past two weeks. Items stolen include two TVs, a DVD player and a radio. Investigation ongoing.

Nov 7:

A resident on Booth St South in Campbellford reported the theft of a Dewalt mitre saw from her front porch.

A Brighton resident dialed 911 and advised emergency call takers that he was just checking to see if his new cell phone worked. Officers attended and cautioned him for misuse of the 911 system.

Police are investigating a ‘road rage’ incident that occurred at the McDonald’s Road, Northumberland Forest ATV Trail between a pickup truck and three ATV’s. The truck sustained approx. $1,000 damages. Investigation ongoing.

Nov 8:

A 23 yr old inmate at Warkworth Institution is under investigation for throwing a tray of food at a corrections officer. Charges pending.

An employee at a Campbellford business heard a nearby homeowner screaming for help and stating that he had an intruder in his home. Officers arrived and located no-one else in the residence. The man, who was suffering from a mental illness, was taken to a nearby hospital by ambulance for treatment.

A Brighton resident on Tillings Rd reported the theft of a five gallon jerry can of diesel fuel that had occurred hours earlier between 3:30-4:00am. Citizens are encouraged to report suspicious persons or vehicles at the time they are observed in order to allow for possible identification of the suspects by police.

Nov 9:

Seven hunters were spoken to by police in the area of Dunbar Rd in Alnwick-Haldimand Twp. All were found to be in compliance with regulations.

Police responded to a domestic disturbance at a Campbellford home where one partner was threatening self-harm with a knife. Officers arrived and transported that person to a nearby hospital for mental health treatment.

Officers responded to three family disputes, two in Hamilton Twp and one in Brighton. No charges resulted and advice was given to the family members involved.

*Northumberland OPP officers also investigated 11 accidental 911 calls, 16 motor vehicle collisions, 54 traffic related complaints and conducted seven RIDE programs during this time period.

**Northumberland OPP would like to remind the public that it is illegal to reverse up Hwy 401 on ramps. Motorists are expected to obey all traffic laws and are asked to exercise patience and caution when entering construction zones.
