LOTTERY SCAM IN WELLINGTON NORTH

(WELLINGTON NORTH TOWNSHIP, ON) -On September 16, 2014, Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a call from a senior citizen advising that he was the victim of a lottery fraud.

The victim received a phone call from a Jamaican number advising that he was the winner of $7 million and needed to send $500 to receive the winnings. Money was sent, then repeated calls were made to the victim for more money to be sent in order to receive the winnings.

Police urge the public to be wary of anyone attempting to have money sent to them in return for a prize. Never send money to anyone you don’t know and trust.

Family members, individuals having power of attorney over loved ones, neighbours, health care workers, as well as legal and financial service providers, are urged to be on the watch for scams.
