In the week of November 30th to December 07th, Hawkesbury Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers responded to 184 occurrences. Two break and enter incidents were reported. Two incidents of assault and five incidents of theft were reported. In the last week, officers investigated one impaired driving related incident. Out of these 184 occurrences, 28 concluded with charges.
IMPAIRED DRIVER
(HAWKESBURY, ON) – On Saturday December 05th, at 7:45pm, Hawkesbury OPP Constable Jonathan Bouchard was conducting a RIDE initiative on McGill Street at Mill Entrance in Hawkesbury, when a 2011 Toyota Highlander stopped at the checkpoint.
Interaction with the male driver gave the officer reason to believe that he had operated his motor vehicle with blood alcohol content over 80 mgs.
Consequently, the driver, Remi GAUTHIER (64 yrs) of Champlain, was arrested and charged under the Criminal Code of Canada with the following section:
– 253(1)(b) Driving with More than 80 mgs of Alcohol in Blood.
He was also charged under the Liquor Licence Act with the following section:
– 32(1) Driving motor vehicle with liquor readily available.
The vehicle was seized for 7 days and the driver’s licence was immediately suspended for 90 days.
He was later released and scheduled to appear at court on December 16th, 2015 in L’Orignal.
LOCK IT OR LOSE IT
(HAWKESBURY, ON) – The Hawkesbury OPP is encouraging residents to follow tips from the Lock it or Lose it initiative to help prevent thefts of motor vehicles and thefts from motor vehicles:
-Always roll up your vehicle’s windows, lock the doors and pocket the key
-Never leave your vehicle unattended while its running
-If you have a garage, use it. Lock the vehicle and the garage doors
-Never leave your vehicle keys in plain view or easily accessible
-Always park in a busy, well-lit area
-Never leave valuable objects or packages in plain view
With the Christmas shopping, thieves are walking the streets and parking lots looking for opportunities. Over the years, officers have noticed that thieves will try out car doors and will eventually pass to the next car if the doors are locked. They are looking for a quick easy grab. Minimise the opportunities and you will reduce the risk of becoming a victim.
The Hawkesbury Auxiliary OPP officers recently carried out a Crime Prevention Initiative, inspecting vehicles in parking lots and visiting several businesses, handing out information leaflets to business owners and customers on how to protect your home and vehicle.

BEWARE OF PHONE AND INTERNET FRAUDSTERS
(HAWKESBURY, ON) – Hawkesbury Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) assisted with some fraud calls during the past weeks. OPP is asking members of the public to be aware of the following fraudulent activities related to individuals claiming they are calling from Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) or from Microsoft.
Fraudsters are calling homeowners indicating that a criminal investigation was conducted and legal actions will be initiated on delinquent taxes owed to the government. The fraudsters represent themselves as an agent of the CRA attempting to get residents to send them money and gain valuable personal information in the process.
Scammers are also calling or sending emails claiming they work for Microsoft, advising victims that their computer contains a virus. If you fall for it and remote access to your computer is granted, scammers can then access any personal information stored on your computer.
These criminals are looking for your personal information in hopes of defrauding you.
What You Can Do To Protect Yourself From Being A Victim Of Fraud or Identity Theft:
Guard Your Personal Information
Never give personal information by phone, Internet or mail unless you initiate the contact
Shield your debit card PIN and never lend your cards
Report missing credit or debit cards
Shred documents with personal information
Your SIN should only be used for employment and tax information
Guard Your Computer and its Information
Select complex passwords combining letters, numbers and symbols
Install firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware and security software – update often
Don’t buy and don’t reply to spam or emails that ask for banking information
