Fog A Factor In Multiple Collisions

(CENTRAL ELGIN, ON) – On the 20th of January 2017 Elgin County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) investigated two different collisions on Belmont Rd within minutes of each other.

The first collision occurred around 6:40am when a 2004 Jeep Liberty attempted to pass a north bound 2010 Volkswagen Jetta. The collision occurred near Ferguson Line on Belmont road when the Jeep came into contact with the Jetta. The jeep lost control and rolled numerous times coming to a rest in a field. The Jetta sustained heavy damage to the front.

Malahide Volunteer Fire Department along with St. Thomas Elgin Paramedics attended the scene and assisted the drivers involved. One driver was transported to hospital with minor injuries.

Jessy Jones age 23 of Aylmer, ON stands charged with careless driving contrary to section 130 of the Highway Traffic Act.

At approximately 6:45am a second collision occurred at Ron McNeil and Belmont road. A 2003 Dodge Caravan was west bound on Ron McNeil Line when it failed to stop at the intersection. A 2010 Dodge Pickup truck was traveling southbound on Belmont road through the intersection. A collision occurred between the Dodge Caravan and Dodge Pickup truck.

A 2006 Subaru and a 2006 Honda were stationary at the stop sign facing eastbound on Ron McNeil Line. The force of the collision caused the Caravan to spin and collide with the Subaru. The Subaru then collided with the Honda.

Central Elgin Volunteer Fire Department attended the scene with the St. Thomas Elgin paramedics. Paramedics attended to the people involved in the collision and transported one person to hospital with minor injuries.

Cornelius Friesen age 43 of Malahide Township stands charged with careless driving contrary to section 130 of the Highway Traffic Act.

The Elgin County OPP would like to remind drivers to drive according to road and weather condition. Fog was a factor in both of these collisions. Having your lights on, driving at a reduced speed, increasing your distance between the vehicle in front of you are ways to manage bad weather.
