DRIVER FACING NUMEROUS CHARGES AFTER FAILING TO STOP FOR POLICE

(LONDON, ON) – On July 29, 2014 at approximately 11:40 p.m. members of the Middlesex County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and Chippewas of the Thames First Nation Police observed a suspicious vehicle on Colonel Talbot Road by Littlewood Road in the City of London. Police followed the vehicle into Elgin County and with the assistance of Elgin OPP, attempted to stop the vehicle. The suspect vehicle failed to stop for police. Further attempts were made before the vehicle eventually came to a stop. The vehicle stopped briefly until the driver put it in motion, driving into the police cruiser then fleeing at a high rate of speed.

The vehicle continued through areas within Elgin County and the City of St. Thomas where it was later located on Flora Street by members of the St. Thomas Police Service. Four people were observed fleeing on foot and eventually apprehended.

As a result of the investigation, police have charged driver Darryl STURGEON, age 21 of Chippewas of the Thames First Nation with dangerous driving, flight from police and drive while disqualified in addition to a number of charges under the Highway Traffic Act. The involved vehicle has been impounded for 45 days.

The accused has been released from police custody and is scheduled to appear in a London courtroom August 26, 2014 to speak to the charges.
