(NORFOLK COUNTY, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Norfolk County Detachment investigated an incident after stopping a vehicle at a Norfolk Street North, Simcoe, Norfolk County, Ontario address.
On Saturday, October 1, 2016 at approximately 3:31 p.m., police were contacted by a concerned motorist about a vehicle, described as a moving van that was travelling northbound on Norfolk Street North.
A patrolling officer located the vehicle and activated their emergency equipment in order to conduct a traffic stop. During the course of the investigation, the officer was assaulted by the driver of the stopped vehicle. The officer returned to their police vehicle after the driver put the vehicle into motion. The driver of the stopped vehicle then reversed into the front of the police vehicle causing extensive damage.
As a result of the collision, the officer suffered minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The driver then fled from the area at a high rate of speed.
On Sunday, October 2, 2016, the driver the fleeing vehicle was located and taken into custody without incident by the Niagara Regional Police Service.
The investigation is continuing and charges are pending.
