In November of 2014, a 44 year old ER Physician Darryl Gebien, who was at the time practicing at the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) in Barrie Ontario, was arrested and charged with three counts of Utter A Forged Document. Dr. Gebien forged three prescriptions to obtain the drug Fentanyl. At that time he was released from custody with a court date of December 15th, 2014.
Since Dr. Gebien’s arrest Barrie Police Service Street Crime Unit has continued to further investigate the actions of Dr. Gebien.
On Monday January 19th, 2015 officers of the Street Crime Unit arrested and charged Dr. Gebien with an additional 65 Criminal Code Charges in relation to forging prescriptions of Fentanyl and the Trafficking of Fentanyl. Approximately 515 Fentanyl patches have been fraudulently issued by Dr. Gebien from the month of June 2014 to November 2014.
His charges include:
Forgery (Making ) Forged Document – make a false prescription for Fentanyl
Forgery (Use) Forged Document – Fentanyl
Trafficking a Controlled Substance – Fentanyl
Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking – Fentanyl
Possession of a Controlled Substance – Fentanyl
Also arrested in connection to the Trafficking of Fentanyl through Dr. Gebien is a 31 year Barrie female and a 22 year old Barrie man, who are known to Dr. Gebien but are not linked to RVH. The female has been charged with 27 Criminal Code Charges and the male has been charged with 39 Criminal Code Charges. Both have obtained numerous Fentanyl patches through the same process unlawfully.
Their charges include:
Possession of a Controlled Substance – Fentanyl
Trafficking a Controlled Substance – Fentanyl
Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking – Fentanyl
All three attended bail court today.
Through investigation it appears that these Fentanyl patches were not destined for the community of Barrie but were intended for personal use.
Dr. Gebien is currently not working at RVH.
