(MIDDLESEX CENTRE, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) West Region Highway Safety Division (HSD) has charged a driver for speeding while being distracted behind the wheel.
On December 10, 2013 a member of the OPP West Region HSD observed a car travelling well in excess of the speed limit and driving erratically. The officer could see that the driver was also texting. The officer stopped the vehicle and further investigation revealed the driver was not wearing her seatbelt.
As a result of the investigation, police issued Provincial Offences Notices to the female driver Courtney POMFET, age 19 of Belleville, ON for the following offences:
drive – handheld communication device under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA)
speeding – 125km/h in a posted 100 km/h zone under the HTA.
OPP West Region Traffic Staff Sergeant Shawn Johnson advised, “When drivers choose to ignore any one of the Big Four Factors, let alone three of them, it creates the perfect storm for the potential to die on our highwaysâ€Â.
The OPP continues to focus on the “big four†risk behaviours which include aggressive driving, distracted driving, impaired driving, and occupants not wearing safety restraints. These are the leading causes of injuries and deaths on Ontario roads. The OPP will continue to use both enforcement and education to help curb the rise of accidents and the unnecessary loss of life.
