(COLLINGWOOD AND THE BLUE MOUNTAINS, ON) Officers from the Collingwood and The Blue Mountains Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) dealt with several traffic related incidents over the course of the long weekend.
On the 31st of July 2015 shortly before 5:00pm, a member of the Collingwood and The Blue Mountains OPP Traffic Unit was conducting radar patrols on Highway 26 near Poplar Sideroad when a vehicle was found to be travelling at 136 km/h in a posted 90 km/h zone. A vehicle stop was initiated where it was found that the motorist was a prohibited driver under the Criminal Code and a suspended driver under the Highway Traffic Act. The male driver from Kitchener was charged and his vehicle was impounded for 45 days.
Also during the weekend, an officer on patrols in Thornbury observed a female operating an E-bike without a helmet and upon interacting with the female it was found that the E-bike had been modified by removing the pedals. As a result, the 41 year-old operator from The Blue Mountains was charged with drive under suspension, operate motor vehicle on a highway – no insurance, fail to wear proper helmet on power-assisted bicycle and under The Blue Mountains By-Law for parking in a designated parking space without a permit.
On Sunday the 2nd of August 2015 at approximately 8:30am, the OPP Marine Unit was dispatched to a boater in distress in the area of Nottawasaga Island. The boater was able to call 911 however had to straddle his vessel as it had capsized due to the boat taking on water. Thankfully the vessel remained buoyant to some degree and OPP Marine Unit members were able to attend to the male and return him to shore. Boaters are reminded to carry with them a fully charged cell phone, have personal floatation devices for all persons on board and all necessary safety equipment depending on the type and size of vessel.
