CELEBRATING PARRY SOUND’S CROSSING GUARDS

(WEST PARRY SOUND, ON) – In recognition of the “Crossing Guard Celebration” put on by the Town of Parry Sound on February 5 2014, the West Parry Sound Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to remind motorists about the important role a Crossing Guard plays.

According to the Highway Traffic Act, a Crossing Guard means a person who is directing the movement of persons across a highway. However, a Crossing Guard has a much larger role than simply moving persons from one side to the other. They assist our children, our adults and our seniors to arrive to their destination safely; they also ensure that motorists are paying attention to the pedestrians around them.

Crossing Guards also educate pedestrians and motorists on how to obey traffic signals and how to ensure the proper person receives the right of way. Crossing Guards are teaching our society patience to wait for a light to turn green, a “walk indicator” to appear and for pedestrians to cross.

Crossing Guards ensure our most precious assets, our children, arrive to their destination safely.

The OPP would like to remind all motorists that they have the obligation, under the Highway Traffic Act, to obey a Crossing Guard’s direction.
