(GUELPH-ERAMOSA TOWNSHIP, ON) – On May 29, 2016 at approximately 7:18 p.m. members of the Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Traffic Management Unit (TMU) were conducting RIDE spot checks on Conservation Road in Guelph-Eramosa Township when they observed a 2012 Mercedes pull over to the north shoulder and the occupants switch drivers.
Officers spoke with the occupants of the motor vehicle including the male who was initially observed in the driver’s seat prior to switching and a strong odour of an alcoholic beverage was detected on his breath. The male confirmed that he had been consuming alcohol earlier. An Approved Roadside Screening Device test was conducted which resulted in a fail. The driver was arrested and transported to a local OPP Operation Centre for further testing.
His driver’s licence has been suspended for 90 days and the vehicle impounded for a period of seven days as per statute.
43-year-old Bassam TALYA of Brampton has been charged with over 80 Mgs contrary to the Criminal Code of Canada. He is to appear in Guelph Criminal Court on July 8, 2016 to answer to the charge.
