(TOWNSHIP OF GEORGIAN BLUFFS, ON) – Grey County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is issuing a safety message to motorists who have recently had, or about to have, snow tires installed —- ensure the lug nuts are re-torqued.
On Monday, November 2, 2015, at approximately 8:54 a.m., a Toyota vehicle was travelling west bound on Hwy. 6 & 21 in the Township of Georgian Bluffs when the front left driver’s side wheel came off. The driver recently had snow tires installed.
Police received a second call at approximately 2:20 p.m., after an Acura vehicle was making a right turn into a commercial parking lot on Hwy. 6 & 21 in the Township of Georgian Bluffs when the front right passenger wheel disengaged. There were no injuries reported.
It is necessary to re-torque all wheel nuts to ensure that they are not too tight or too loose. Loose nuts could become a hazard by falling off due to vibrations while driving. Over-tightened nuts can damage bolt threads or break the fasteners. When you install wheels for the first time, you should re-torque your wheels after about 100 km to 150 km to ensure proper fastening.
