Abductor Abandons Ejected 1 Year Old After Police Pursuit/Collisions

(MIDDLESEX COUNTY, ON) – On November 1, 2015, members of the Oxford County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Elgin County OPP, and the Middlesex County OPP, assisted in stopping a suspect vehicle involved in an attempted abduction incident, which occurred in another police agency’s jurisdiction.

OPP received information from the Waterloo Regional Police Service that a male party had abducted a child during a domestic incident, and was suspected to be headed westbound on Highway 401 in a green Chevrolet sport utility vehicle (SUV).

Shortly before 8:00 p.m., OPP officers located the SUV travelling westbound on Highway 401 near Putnam Road, and attempted to stop the vehicle on several occasions. The driver fled from police. The suspect vehicle had just passed the 402 Highway interchange when it struck two police cruisers. As a result of the contact, the SUV struck the median wall, crossed the westbound lanes, left roadway, entered the north ditch, rolled, and came to rest on its wheels.

The 38-year-old male driver from Cambridge, Ontario, attempted to flee on foot. He was apprehended, and transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A second occupant in the vehicle, a 1-year-old female from Cambridge, Ontario, was ejected from the vehicle during the collision. She received non-life-threatening injuries, and was also transported to hospital, where she was treated and released.

As a result of the OPP investigation, the accused has been charged with;

Assault with a Weapon x 2 – Criminal Code

Resist Peace Officer- Criminal Code

Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle x 2 – Criminal Code

Flight While Pursued by Peace Officer – Criminal Code

Abandoning Child – Criminal Code

Dangerous Operation of Motor Vehicle Cause Bodily Harm – Criminal Code

Driving While Under Suspension – Highway Traffic Act

Drive While Passenger Under 16 Fails to Occupy Position with a Seatbelt – Highway Traffic Act

He will appear in the London Court of Justice today to answer to the charges.
