20 Year Old Ditches Vehicle After Family Pet Jumps Into Driver’s Seat – Crowding Driver’s Seat Charge Laid

(NORFOLK COUNTY, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Norfolk County detachment has charged a 20-year-old male after police investigated a single motor vehicle collision at an Angling Road, Townsend, Norfolk County, Ontario address.

On Monday, January 30, 2017 at approximately 4:44 p.m., police were called to a single motor vehicle collision.

Through the course of investigation, it was determined that a vehicle was travelling on Angling Road between Concession 6 and Lutesville Road when a family pet located in the passenger seat, jumped into the driver’s seat resulting in the driver losing control and entering the ditch.

The driver and animal did not suffer any injuries.

As a result of investigation, police have charged 20-year-old Andrew HARTSGROVE of Norfolk County, Ontario with crowding driver’s seat contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.

“This incident had the potential to have devastating consequences, not only for the driver and animal located inside the vehicle, but innocent motorists travelling along the roadway. This is a good reminder for all motor vehicle operators to ensure that your family pet is always secured with a car restraint, a crate or a gate to keep them away from the driver. It prevents the animal from jumping into the driver’s lap and also gives your pet the ability to look out the window.” – Constable Ed Sanchuk, Norfolk County OPP.
