Skateboarders Almost Struck

(NORFOLK COUNTY, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Norfolk County detachment would like to remind everyone that participates in any outdoor related activities of the importance of their safety when out at night.

On Thursday, August 20, 2015 at approximately 8:37 p.m., police were contacted by a concerned operator of a motor vehicle after the driver had to take evasive maneuvers in order to avoid striking pedestrians that were skate boarding on the roadway near a Nixon Road address.

The driver was able to avoid the youths however called police to relay their concerns.

In dark conditions visibility drops for motorist and being seen while outdoors needs to be everyone’s priority with being seen at night.

The following are a few tips to keep runners and walkers safe while out in the darkness.

Reflective Clothing for Night Running/Walking:

Most clothing can be found with reflective strips or logos. Visit a store that sells runner-specific gear to ensure the highest visibility and the right fit. Reflective jackets, vests, and belts can be worn to make sure drivers notice the runner. If a vest seems too cumbersome there are options. Everything from socks to hats can be found in reflective orange and yellow colors.

Reflective Bands for Night Running/Walking:

One quick way to increase the visibility of a jogger at night is by wearing a reflective arm band. These small strips offer an easy way to add a reflective safety feature without adding the bulk that often comes along with a jacket or vest. Bands are also an inexpensive method of altering a running wardrobe to fit the needs of being out at night. Small flashing lights can be put on clothing and will help with being visible to motorist. Runners should never depend solely on the drivers however. Always be mindful of the traffic conditions on any road.

Although many runners love to listen to music while jogging, night running is a time to be completely aware of your surroundings. Listen for oncoming vehicles and watch for their lights in the trees and on buildings as they approach. Get off the road and leave plenty of room for the driver to pass.

Always stay alert and aware of what’s going on around you. The more aware you are the less vulnerable you are. Running in a group or pairs increases your safety.

Trust your intuition about a person or an area. React on your intuition and avoid a person or situation if you’re unsure. If something tells you a situation is not right”
