CREDIT CARD SCAM CIRCULATING

(Madoc, ON) – On February 3, 2016 members of Central Hastings O.P.P received two complaints from Madoc residents reporting a possible credit card scam circulating in the area.

Both complainants advised they had received a telephone call from someone offering to lower their interest rate on their credit card. The scammer asked if the resident owned a Visa or Mastercard and then requested the credit card number so the lower rate could be applied.

In both cases the homeowners did not divulge any personal or financial information and hung up the phone.

Central Hastings OPP reminds the public that scammers may try to trick people into revealing information about their credit cards either over the phone or through e-mail. It’s important to know that your credit card company or bank would never call to ask for personal information such as your credit card number, expiry number, PIN, or the security number on the back of your card.
