(MIDDLESEX COUNTY, ON) – On April 14, 2016, at approximately 1:22 p.m., the Middlesex County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) observed a motor vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on Elginfield Road, between Clarke Road and Prospect Hill Road, in the Municipality of Lucan Biddulph, Ontario. The vehicle, a black Nissan car, was measured to be travelling in excess of 50 kilometers per hour (km/hr) over the posted 80 km/hr speed limit. A traffic stop was conducted, and as a result of the police investigation, a 52-year-old male from Middlesex Centre, Ontario, has been charged with race a motor vehicle, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act (HTA).
On April 17, 2016, at approximately 11:33 a.m., the Middlesex County Ontario OPP observed a motor vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on Highway 401, near Highbury Avenue, in the City of London, Ontario. The vehicle, a black Harley Davidson motor cycle, was measured to be travelling in excess of 50 km/r over the 100 km/hr speed limit. A traffic stop was conducted, and as a result of the police investigation, a 35-year-old male from London, Ontario, has been charged with race a motor vehicle, contrary to the HTA.
On April 17, 2016, at approximately 2:19 p.m., the Middlesex County OPP observed a vehicle at a high rate of speed on Highway 402, near Glendon Drive, in the Municipality of Strathroy Caradoc, Ontario. The vehicle was measured to be travelling in excess of 50 km/hr over the posted the 100 km/hr speed limit. A traffic stop was conducted, and as a result of the police investigation, a female driver has been charged with race a motor vehicle, contrary to the HTA.
On April 17, 2016, at approximately 2:48 p.m., the Middlesex County (OPP) observed a motor vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on McGillivray Drive, in the Municipality of North Middlesex, Ontario. The vehicle, a red Honda car, was measured to be travelling in excess of 50 kilometers per hour (km/h) over the 80 km/hr speed limit. There was a child in a booster seat in the vehicle at the time. A traffic stop was conducted, and as a result of the police investigation, a 23-year-old male, from London, Ontario, has been charged with race a motor vehicle, contrary to the HTA.
The drivers’ vehicles were seized, and their driver’s licences suspended, for 7 days.
The Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) Driver’s Handbook states: “The risk of a fatality or serious injury is almost five times greater for vehicles crashing at 50 km/h or more above the posted limit on a highway with a posted limit of 100 km/h. The increase in risk is even greater on roads with lower posted limits. For example, on roads with a posted limit of 60 km/h or less, the risk of a fatality or serious injury is almost eight times greater for vehicles colliding at 50 km/h or more above the posted limit.”
